Morning walk
A great thing about having teenage kids is that you can get out for a little morning adventure and be back before they know it. Over our summer time in Chamonix we developed a bit of a habit of getting out with Basil for a walk/run up to the Rocher des Montets. It's a steep woodland walk up rewarded with fantastic views over Chamonix town one way and up to the Dru the other. Although we love to picnic, the friendly buvet does a very nice line in crumble and myrtille tart (almost justified by the walk up). After a little refreshment we would...
Lunch time jaunt
Epping Forest, just a short journey from urban East London, where it's possible to lose yourself (and your worries) in the dark, deep forest. Basil just didn't know which squirrel to chase. A wonderful walk through the woods for a picnic lunch. And back to our desks in the afternoon, feeling refreshed.
Out and about in Norway
In Norway things are starting to ease. Quarantine measures are lifting. People are now allowed out in groups no more than five people. My nephew took the opportunity to go for a two day hike ten miles out of Oslo. He took a PACMAT with him big enough for all of them. Check out our XXL, supersized picnic blankets here.
Motivating the kids to get out and walk!
Sometimes it's hard to drag them off the sofa and away from electronics so we thought we'd give them a little motivation and a goal to aim for, something they could be proud to achieve. We talked about possible things between us and decided 100 miles forwards was a good one. As we were doing a lot of steep tracks too, not just walking distance, we thought we should have a vertical target as well - so we set the goal of "climbing Mont Blanc", and drew up a chart, something measurable, where they could see their progress. On each walk we...
Fit and Fifty
After decades of cruising on my age it became clear that if I wanted to keep up with my kids, and some of my favourite hobbies - ski touring, snowboarding, cycling and walking - I would need to put in a bit more effort. After a tough start I’ve almost found my feet in fitness. Nearly fifty and nearly fit. It’s not been an easy journey. Years of partying and two children very close in age took their toll. I joined a couple of classes to make it a little more fun and sociable but now I feel confident enough to go...
