Our last day on this trip in Bannau Brycheiniog. After packing up and clearing out of our lovely holiday cottage, we headed for a picnic walk on the way home. Parking up by The Black Mountain Quarries, it was tipping down so we got on our waterproofs, with everything in the rucksack being put in a waterproof bag and a waterproof cover over the top of the rucksack too! Enjoying the view over Llyn y Fan Fach

Llyn y Fan Fach in Bannau Brycheiniog (Breacon Beacons), known for its stunning landscape and views, sounded like the perfect place to head for a picnic walk. Obviously a popular destination, and with a trail running competition on too, the start of our walk was busier than we'd expected. A quick picnic stop at Pen Y Fan

We couldn't go to Bannau Brycheiniog and not do a Pen Y Fan picnic walk! The day started off bright and sunny, but with a wet and cold forecast, the route wasn't too crowded. In fact, we hardly saw anybody. Heading up from the car park the initial part of the walk was quite gentle, revealing more view with each step. Gradually the terrain became steeper and the path narrower. Where there’s a castle there’s a view

Where there’s a castle there’s a view

Carreg Cennen, built at the end of the 13th century, did not disappoint. Sitting up on a limestone crag, with views for miles over the Carmarthenshire countryside. The castle walk was recommended by our hosts seemed like the best idea for our first day in the area. We packed our bags (picnics for us and Basil, waterproofs, gloves, hats, PACMATs and head torches) and set off on foot from the door of our cottage. After an hour or so we were ready for a snack.
