The History of Romance
Whilst romance has come for many to mean flowers, chocolates and fancy dinners, the etymology of romance in fact indicates far more. The history of word is embedded deeply in ideas of adventure and nature!
Originating in France, the word romance indicated an epic tale or ballad, often with themes of chivalric adventure. Early nineteenth century Spanish and Italian definitions also saw the word to mean "adventurous" and "passionate”. Later in the Romantic Era of the 19th century, artists concerned themselves with spontaneity, individualism and, most importantly, a love and appreciation of nature.
It perhaps goes without saying that these versions of romance still ring true for us! And whilst a posh restaurant is a lovely treat, we would pick an adventure filled picnic and watching the sun set over a glorious landscape any day!
