Morvan camping
We arrived at Camping Espace Vital in La Grande-Verrière late afternoon, just as the light was starting to soften. We were greated by Paul, the friendly owner, who guided us through the gates and over the grass to find our pitch. He showed us the options and even lent us a longer electric hook-up cable so we could set up with the best view.
There was only one other tent in the field, tucked up at the top, so it felt wonderfully peaceful. Paul helped us get the van level using the on-site chocks, then left us to get sorted.

Once we were organised we popped out for a quick walk with Basil before the sun set, returning back to the fire having been lit by Paul around the barn bar area. We sat out and chatted with Paul and Leanne, enjoying the warm evening air.
We had a wonderfully quiet night, enjoying the night sky full of stars. The site is up in the Morvan hills around 20 minutes’ drive from the historic town of Autun. It's a perfect tranquil, rural base from which to explore the area.
On our second day here Guy cycled to the bakery in the close by Saint Leger sous Beuvray and we prepared a picnic feast. Then, setting off on foot from the campsite, we walked the long way round to the village. Through the woods, across farm fields, following the footpaths. Eventually we arrived back at the bakery and stopped for a cold drink, before heading back to the campsite with a picnic on the way, arriving at the van just before a very heavy downpour. We spent the evening in the barn area reading books and chatting.
Sadly we only had two nights to spend here. We would have loved to explore more, but we had to start heading back towards Calais.

What we loved about this campsite:
Spacious pitches, thought it's sloped the site provides levelling chocks.
Electric hook‑up available for vans/pitches. The site provided a longer lead.
Free WiFi across the site
Pool, hot tub, fire pit and communal lounge/bar. Although we didn't try the pool or hot tub the fire pit was lovely and on our second night, in the rain, the bar area was perfect.
Friendly hosts, Paul & Leanne, full of helpful local tips.
You can even book a Massage treatment. Sadly I didn't spot this until it was too late.
Dogs are welcome
The night sky, unspoilt by light pollution was fabulous.

What to note:
The access road into the campsite is narrow. It was fine in our van, but I wouldn't want to take a larger camper.
It's a small site with only a few pitches. Making it a wonderfully peaceful spot.
In the village, if the butcher is closed, there's a vending machine. (Being vegetarian we didn't try it much to Basil's disappointment).

There are a couple of retro caravans you can book, ready to go at 45 euros a night.
Our camper/caravan pitch, with electric hook up (10amp) was 30 euros per night.
A tent pitch is 22 euros per night.
Here are a few ideas to enjoy the area:
Hiking and Walking Trails
The Morvan offers forested hills, gentle ridges, and mixed terrain. From the campsite you can pick up local paths and enjoy walks of various lengths. There is a 6 km circular walk straight from the site.
Discover Autun
Just a short drive away, Autun is a historic town founded in Roman times Autun is good for a day trip, with an amphitheatre and cathedral.
Water & Lakes
While this site is more hills/forest than lakeside, you’re still within reach of lakes like Lac des Settons for kayaking, swimming or relaxing by the water.
Star‑Gazing & Evening Fire
With little light pollution at this site, the Milky Way and a sky full of stars are amazing.
Cycling / Van‑Based Exploration
We unloaded our bikes to explore the local area, and pop to the bakery. There are many scenic spots, local markets, small villages and forest roads.
Practicalities
Pick‑up supplies. Although the campsite provides a few bits and bobs (wine and pizza for example) and the bakery is a cycle away, it would be good to arrive with a few supplies.
The site is open May–October
Why Choose This Site?
It's an incredibly peaceful spot. Tranquillity over crowds: This is not a massive holiday‑park. You’ll get space, calm, and fewer neighbours.
Hosts who care: The reviews consistently mention friendly, helpful hosts, which can make your stay more comfortable and personal.
Nature‑first location It’s about forest, hills, fresh air, gentle exploration.
Van‑compatible facilities: While modest, the site has what you need - hook‑up, WiFi, pool, fire pit and comfortable amenities.
Final Thoughts
If I were packing a camper‑van and heading for a week (or two) of relaxed, slow‑paced adventures in the French countryside, I’d absolutely pick this spot. I’d make sure to arrive in daylight, get the van levelled, prepare for a good night’s star‑gazing, plan a couple of hikes or bike rides each day, and maybe one evening drive into Autun for dinner out. Days could be as active or as restful as you like.
